Competition is not just about winning or beating an opponent; it is about allowing participants to display and improve their skills in a safe environment. Tournaments can be one of the most dynamic and fun aspects of Songahm Taekwondo.
Excel Martial Arts is a registered school of the American Taekwondo Association, the largest and most popular martial arts organization in North America (possibly the world). For over 40 years, ATA has organized 100s of tournaments per year in every region of the country. These tournaments are exclusive to ATA members and provide participants the chance to compete against competitors of their own age and rank, the same rules, and the same agreed upon safety gear, ensuring fair and equal competition.
Tournaments provide students an opportunity to make new friends, learn to overcome nerves, and enhance their skills and technique. A popular quote within the organization from Eternal Grand Master Lee is, "To compete is To Win!" Getting on the mat alone, allowing yourself to be judged against your peers, builds intestinal fortitude and makes other life challenges, such as presenting in front of your peers in the classroom or boardroom, seem to be a breeze.
ATA hosts national tournaments in the Fall and Spring, and an international competition in the Summer. In addition to these annual tournaments, there are many district and regional tournaments held all across the country. Tournament participation is always optional. Talk to your instructor to learn more about how you can participate in a tournament.
